Omereada H. Omereada I have written several articles on the origin of philosophical thought, some of my students say they couldn’t understand the level of rigor or that they lack the power of analysis to decipher that level of thought. I am not a public intellectual like Michael Eric Dyson whose analytical discourse I admire, I am a mathematician by training whose nature was shaped by philosophical thought. Though I do think like a mathematician, but to really know how and why I think the way I do, one should first of all try to know how mathematicians think and then read some of the early books of Kwame Nkrumah especially “Consciencism”. Though my thinking process was shaped by Consciencism, I have since developed my own thought which has guided most of the things I have done in life, both within the dictates of ordinary morality but also in my professional life.
I have not done any new mathematics in a long time but the process that engages mathematical thought still keeps me awake at night, especially those involving engineering design. I told my students that there is nothing they cannot understand, no topic is sacrosanct, no thought could be too big, Karl Marx was kicked out of the University because the professors couldn’t understand him. Thought is everything, as a young man my friends say I was incapable of making even an honest mistake in any topic that I have mastered completely, I wasn’t good at every topic in mathematics at the University of Nigeria, I hated Tensor Analysis and Integral Equations, chiefly because I also hated the professors that taught these classes, Professors Ukeje and Nwoke respectively, but in topics like Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra and Field Theory, my proofs were flawless and unmistakably original, I could do no wrong and I let my professors know it. I also hated topology for the same reason, I couldn’t stand Professor Banerjee, who basically spoke to himself after memorizing sections of the textbook, the only copy in the department. Ironically I am a professor of algebraic topology specializing in homology and cohomolgy, topics I hated in college. My hatred for Banerjee meant I had to device a means of understanding topology, which I did.
When you study in an environment where emphasis is placed on memorizing proofs with little understanding of the underlying logic, the ability to demonstrate rigor becomes a powerful tool; I learnt this from Dr. Frank Okolie at UNN. Above all, Dr. Okolie. taught me about competitive and comparative understanding. If I had to compete with other students I must have an edge, more like sports. It has its coaches, its clubs, its sponsors, its practice sessions and finally its competitions. I had to be far superior to the best student, I had to discourage my competitor. Natural ability is necessary but not sufficient for success, the gifted child has to have the right coach or guru, family support and most of all the will and desire to win. I didn’t know if I had compelling natural abilities by the time I met Okolie, but whatever I had, flourished after I met him. He freshened my eyes to the possibilities of discovery; I was never the same henceforth. I was determined never to lose to any one, especially in topics in which I have mastery. Whenever things are logical, I prevailed, I would not tolerate human failure, no failure should be attributed to my incapacity to reason; in terms of intellectual reproduction, I could not tolerate a superior thought above mine, I had to demonstrate mastery and superior competence, no matter the opponent, I have to prevail, that’s the law.
For those readers who follow American presidential elections, Newt Gingrich is poised to be nominee for the Republican Party. A few months ago Gingrich said Obama was following the socialist tradition of his father in Kenyan politics. Some Americans consider Gingrich a philosopher and a man of bold ideas, I consider him a man with bold and thoughtless ideas, he lacks the basic attributes that make a philosopher, “thought”. Gingrich posited that anti-colonialism was evil. Let’s examine that.
Obama was born in the United States, son of a Kenyan father and a white mother, his father was not a socialist, his father was in fact an apologist for aristocratic elitism, a Harvard trained economist, his father campaigned for Tom Mboya who was in fact in the capitalist camp of the anti-colonial movement in Kenya. Philosophy, in retrospect, should serve the needs of the society, it should be rooted in the culture of the people for the sole purpose of fostering their emancipation from want and other extrinsic ideologies alien to the that culture; capitalism may have been good for western Europe but that was the ideology of the colonialists at the time of Tom Mboya and Odinga Odinga both from Kenya, the great Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, and Nnamdi Azikiwe of Nigeria. If the history professor Gingrich does not understand the ontology of philosophical thought, then he is not only a casualty of history, he is also its most unrepentant heretic. Capitalism as a mode of production in America today is inherently evil.
The late Kenyan philosopher, Henry O. Oruka, presents a historical topology of African philosophy where he posits four trends in African philosophy namely: ethno philosophy, philosophic sagacity, nationalistic-ideological philosophy, and professional philosophy. Consciencism is best described as ‘nationalistic-ideological’ with respect to African philosophical ethos. Such a description coincides with “Philosophy and Ideology for De-Colonization and Development with particular reference to the African Revolution,” the subtitle of Nkrumah’s Consciencism. Consciencism is self-consciously written with specific reference to African national liberation and with the notion of ideology as pivotal to decolonization. It is clear from the subtitle that Nkrumah’s paramount intention is to formulate an African consciousness in socio-political philosophy, a consciousness free from the influences of abstract western philosophy of Mills, Kant, Spinoza and all other philosophies that are useless to the African experience. Even these ethical philosophers say that it is not their concern to improve themselves or anybody else. Their professional aspiration begins and ends with the elucidation of the meaning of moral terms and principles, and the source of moral obligation, as if such obligation exists outside of human experience. They write pages on the philosophy of reason, mind, matter, principles of determinism, morality and truth. But to the African under the bondage of colonialism, any “ism” which does not address the question of man’s subjugation to man or move the discourse about liberation has no place in philosophical Consciencism. As Nkrumah would say, “any ism that does not advance the course of my emancipation from colonialism is another instrument of deception”. Philosophy for the sake of it is an academic exercise good only for classrooms to impress fertile and infantile minds at the expense of the challenges imposed by reality, thought without practice is empty, and practice without thought is blind, Nkrumah wrote in Consciencism.
A colonial master has nothing to preach to me about morality after occupying my land and looting my natural resources, he has no moral philosophical rectitude on truth or reason, he has been blinded by the devices and desires of his own heart and hoodwinked by his insatiable appetite for self-preservation, these colonialists erred and strayed from their ways like lost sheep, they preached peace but practiced war, they have bible on one hand and whip on the other, they taught philosophical thought while remaining culturally thoughtless, there is nothing in their hearts worth of emulation. These thoughts may be good for classroom jingoism, but they hold no reflection on the foundational realities of the occupied colonies. In short, they lived in three dimensions but worshipped in two. If anti-colonialism was so evil, American would still be a British colony and Gingrich, having no aristocratic lordship, would have turned from a pre-school bully to a grown up ditch digger, instead of a history professor and presidential candidate..
Keep hope alive.
