Unfortunately, you just entered one of the toughest competitions in the world. “Job Promotion” Obviously, the “how to get promotion fast” is found in the minds of almost all fresh college graduates. But if you want quick promotion, you have to work to get it. Numerous sites rave endlessly about job promotions which tend to be secondary methods and short lived. How deep and long lasting do you want your promotion to be? Let’s get real here while I show you nine keys steps to achieve your fast promotion. KEY STEP # 1: KNOW YOURSELF It takes more time to really come to understand who you really are. The simplest but most effective and proven worldwide approach to doing evaluation of oneself is by asking the questions that start with the following words; There is no definite order to be followed when asking yourself questions that begins with the words listed above. Here’s how I normally do my evaluation in the company I work for; • Who am I tells you about your origin. Whether you are African, Australian, American etc. You can further break this down to your little communities, then to your family and even more. • Why am I working for this company tells you of your dream or goal in life. • Where do I belong in the company tells you the niche or the position you hold in the company. • How do I relate to others in the company tells you about your attitude towards those who work for you or the ones you work for. Knowing who you really are and how you relate to others in the company will guide your conducts. This promotes good personal relationships between you and your colleagues and even your superiors, thus creating a conducive environment for you to perform without fear and intimidation and earn your promotion fast. KEY STEP # 2: KNOW YOUR EMPLOYER Your employer like any other organizations has its own guiding principles upon which it bases all its actions and decisions. It has its; • Mission • Vision & • Values The mission normally declares a company’s purpose of existence serves as the standard against which all its actions and decisions are weighed. The vision normally serves as the framework for a company’s road map and guides every aspect of its business by what is needed to be accomplished to continue achieving sustainable, quality growth. Values serve as a compass for a company’s actions and describe how the companies behaves in the world. Go astray from your employer’s mission, vision and values and you never get noticed. Remember, there are many of you fighting for the same thing. Do what they want and you get noticed and promoted soon. KEY STEP # 3: UNDERSTAND YOUR LABOR FORCE Assuming that you now know who you really are and that you know who employer really is, now it’s time to know who your workers are. Your workers as you would have known by now are biological and social beings, specific needs outlined in the pyramid of needs by Abraham Maslow. For workers to be effectively functioning, you have to meet the most basic needs that are found on the base of the pyramids. For a start, give them this. Progressively you will build up yourself as to how you can attend to secondary needs of your workers. KEY STEP # 4: COMMUNICATION People become successful because they are able to communicate well and get the instructions across to the workers in a very clear, concise and timely manner. Mastering the skills of effective communication is not as easy as it may sound. But it can be leant. I find it helpful to ask myself the following questions before I talk to my workers. • What am I communicating? • Why am I communicating? • What result do I expect to get? Simple as they may seem but if you cannot answer these three questions properly, then it means you don’t know what you are doing and your chances of failure is very high. KEY STEP # 5: LABOR DISCIPLINE You want to get the best out of your workers and that means your promotion. How will you get promoted if your workers come late to work, run away from work, and don’t achieve your given production targets? You are the one losing a lot in terms of promotion. Four steps to effective labor discipline. 1. Coaching/counseling 2. Oral / Written Warning 3. Suspension 4. Termination After Coaching/counseling fails, an Oral Warning is followed by a Written Warning. If the problem continues, the supervisor then suspends the employee for a period of several days without pay, or writes a final warning notice. If the individual still does not correct his performance, termination follows. Without a disciplined labor force, you won’t get the results your employer expects of you. So you don’t get promoted fast or even worse never get promoted at all. KEY STEP # 6: PLANNING "He who fails to plan is planning to fail" Winston Churchill Winston Churchill made this quote during world war two. But it still hold true today in every aspect of human life. Planning is an integral part of management. It is like a road map that shows you what you want to do, how you want to do it and when you want to complete the tasks. If you are serious with a raise in salary or a promotion, daily plan is essential. Even if you work in a routine job like a bank teller, without a daily plan you are like a ship without course that goes round and round in circle and never reaches its destiny. If you want promotion, you have to set goals. Short terms and long term goals. Your short terms goals build up to your long terms goals. So work hard to achieve your short terms. If you are a sales person, getting sales bonus can be your short team goals. But after all the bonuses, you want to get promoted. So promotion becomes one of your long terms goals. This all happens with planning. KEY STEP # 7: TASK DELEGATION If we paraphrase Adam Smith in his famous book Wealth of Nations, we can say, divide labor according to specific areas of expertise and get more done in a shorter period of time. How can one you efficiently achieve this? Delegate. Effective delegation is also two way traffic that involves two-way discussions and understanding. Listed here are 8 most important questions to ask when you are face with the choice of delegating tasks. 1. What task do you want to delegate? 2. What result (s) do you expect from the delegated task? 3. How should the delegated tasks be completed? 4. When should the delegated task be completed? 5. Which decisions should he or she may make independently and which require your approval? Be specific. 6. When should you follow up on the delegated task? Be specific. 7. If the delegate tasks seems difficult to whom it was delegated, should you cancelled it? Do you have to seek further assistance? Answering these questions honestly will give you a road map to effectively delegate your tasks and get the results you expect. KEY STEP # 8: IMPLEMENTATION You have the best plans right? Now what! Execute the plans. Some people have an attitude of delegating the task to their subordinates and expecting perfection. Congratulation if you receive perfection. But if you don’t, let me honestly tell you that it you are at fault and the buck stop with you. After all, it’s you who wants promotion. Be there to start the task if that’s your responsibility to do so. Be prompt in the execution of your work. Never ever procrastinate. Learn to be punctual all the time. Your bosses are watching. KEY STEP # 9: MONITORING AND EVALUATION Your guys are already at work. How do you measure their performance and the outcome of the assigned tasks? Monitoring and evaluation. Answer these following question to guide you through the process; • Did you complete the task you set out to do? • Was the task completed within the given period of time and budget? • How did you accomplish the it? • If the task was completed, what was the cause? It can be formative (taking place during the life of a project or organisation, with the intention of improving the strategy or way of functioning of the project or organisation). It can also be summative (drawing learnings from a completed project or an organisation that is no longer functioning). Someone once described this as the difference between a check-up and an autopsy! What monitoring and evaluation have in common is that they are geared towards learning from what you are doing and how you are doing it, by focusing on: • Efficiency • Effectiveness FINAL WORDS Know yourself, your workers and your company and align your career aims and goals with the guiding principles of your employer such as mission, vision and values and above all strive to get result your employer expects.
