Amit Khetan Raiganj: A government primary school here was shut as the campus was being used for a wedding since last night. The education authority said it was illegal to allow "personal social programmes" to be held on the school campus.
Headmaster Sunil Jha said he had sought prior approval from the North Dinajpur district primary authority for allowing the wedding on the school grounds -- a claim that has been rejected by the assistant inspector of schools.
Jha also said the wedding had taken place on the campus on a Sunday, when the school is anyway shut and he didn’t know why students did not come to school. The bride's family, however, said they had permission to use the classrooms and the campus today too. Guardians of the school students said the headmaster had announced a holiday. The AI, Supriya Chakraborty, inspected Charubala Primary School this afternoon, when the wedding guests were yet to leave. None of the 80 students were on the campus but all three teachers and Jha were present.
"The headmaster will be showcaused. He has to explain within seven days why no action should be taken against him. No approval was taken from the primary education authority before allowing the school grounds to be used for a wedding. No approval can be expected as it is against government norms. The grounds or the buildings of a government or government aided school cannot be used for personal social programmes," said Chakraborty.
When The Telegraph visited the school in the afternoon, the decorated gate had not been taken off and the campus was strewn with cigarette butts and plastic bottles. Bedrolls were lying across all four classrooms. A soundbox was fitted to a pick-up van that would accompany the married couple. The decorated car that was supposed to take the newly weds to the groom’s house was parked on the grounds. Ramu Basak, who lives close to the school, admitted that he had held the wedding party of his daughter on the school premises last night.
"There is an acute shortage of space in my house. It was not possible for me to get a rented house to organise the wedding ceremony. So I approached the headmaster. Under his advice, I submitted a written application to him to allow me to use the school premises," Basak said.
He said the premises would be cleaned before handing it over to the school authorities in the evening. The headmaster said he had forwarded Basak's application to the sub-inspector of schools and did not think there would be any problem if the premises were used for the wedding on a Sunday.
"But I am not sure why the students did not turn up today," he said. Jha also could not produce any letter of approval from the sub-inspector of schools.
"He could not have received any approval from the sub-inspector of schools because he is on leave. I am in charge now. The letter seeking permission would have come to me," Chakraborty said. She said a detailed report would be sent to the higher authorities.
Shyamali Chowdhury said she had not sent her son to school today as the headmaster had announced a holiday. "My son studies in Class II. He said the headmaster had told them not to come to school today," Chowdhury said
