Cơn mưa chiều đột ngột làm tôi phải vào nấp dưới một mái hiên dọc đường chứ không thể về nhà được. Mãi nhìn mưa ngoài trời mà tôi quên mất cùng với tôi dưới mái hiên là một cô gái trạc chừng hai mươi tuổi đã có mặt ở đó, với dáng vẻ nôn nao, chốc chốc lại nhìn đồng hồ hình như cô ta đã chờ ai đó đã khá lâu. Đúng như điều tôi dự đoán, chừng mười phút sau có một chàng trai hối hả trờ xe máy đến. Người ướt sũng nước mưa, trên tay anh ta là một bó hoa hồng thật đẹp. Cô gái vẻ thờ ơ, quay mặt đi. Hình như họ giận nhau, tôi nghĩ vậy... Mưa càng to nên cả ba không có cách nào hơn là phải cùng nép mình vào trong dưới cái mái hiên ấy. Bỗng nhiên tôi tự thấy mình trở thành một người thừa trong lúc này, nhưng biết làm sao đây? Bất đắc dĩ tôi phải nghe những lời đối thoại của họ.
Người con trai nói với giọng nǎn nỉ:
- Em thông cảm cho anh. Vừa ra khỏi cơ quan, anh chạy ngay ra chợ để lựa một bó hoa thật đẹp, thật vừa ý. Do mãi chọn lựa nên anh đến trễ mất vài mươi phút. Anh biết hôm nay là sinh nhật của em... do đó... anh xin lỗi vì đã...
Không đợi chàng trai dứt câu nói, cô gái vẻ giận dữ:
- Anh thì lúc nào mà không có lý do. Anh có biết đây là lần thứ mấy mà anh đến trễ không? Anh chỉ biết có một mình anh thôi. Còn em ...
Chàng trai vừa phân bua vừa đặt bó hoa lên tay cô gái. Đột nhiên cô gái ném bó hoa xuống đất cùng một lời dứt khoát:

Tôi nghe rõ tiếng khóc nức nở cùng lời van xin tha thiết của chàng trai kia. Họ vội vã bước đi cho dù ngoài trời mưa mỗi lúc càng nặng hạt...
Tôi nhìn bó hoa hồng thật đẹp đang nằm trên vỉa hè dưới cơn mưa tầm tã. Họ giận nhau nhưng bó hoa đẹp kia nào có tội tình gì. Vừa nghĩ tôi vừa bước ra nhặt bó hoa lên. Những giọt nước mưa mịn màng, lấm tấm càng làm cho những cánh hồng đỏ thắm tươi tắn, đẹp đẽ hơn.
Chừng vài phút sau, có hai đứa trẻ chạy vào trú mưa cũng dưới cái mái hiên mà tôi đang đứng từ nãy giờ. Hai đứa mặt mũi lấm lem, người ướt như chuột lột. Qua cử chỉ, tôi đoán chúng là hai anh em. Đứa lớn nói:
- Em ơi, chiều nay anh bán gần hết xấp xé số, chỉ còn lại hai tấm. Anh sẽ để dành cho mẹ. Biết đâu ông trời cũng có khi nhìn lại gia đình mình.
- Em cũng vậy. Chiều nay em mới nhận lương. Ông chủ nói sẽ tǎng lương nếu em chịu khó làm việc. Mà anh có nhớ không hôm nay là ngày sinh nhật mẹ đó. Anh em mình chưa có quà gì cho mẹ cả. Hay là mình ra chợ mua một bó hoa thật đẹp về tặng mẹ...
Nhìn sang bên cạnh, chúng thấy tôi đang cầm bó hoa hồng trên tay. Thằng anh rụt rè hỏi:
- Bó hoa đẹp quá .Chú ơi, chú cho con hỏi, chú mua bao nhiêu mà đẹp vậy?
Tôi chưa kịp trả lời thì đã nghe tiếng đứa em gái:
- Bó hoa đẹp thế kia thì chắc phải đắt lắm. Anh em mình làm gì đủ tiền mà mua tặng mẹ? Thôi anh ạ...
Thật bất ngờ khi chúng hỏi tôi câu ấy. Như một phản xạ tôi nói:
- Vậy hai đứa có thích bó hoa này không thì chú tặng cho.
Tôi trao bó hoa cho hai đứa trẻ. Thật quá bất ngờ hai đứa như sững lại, nét mặt chúng rạng rỡ hẳn lên. Con bé nói:
- Chúng cháu xin cám ơn chú. Chú tốt quá. Chưa bao giờ chúng cháu có được một bó hoa đẹp như vậy, mẹ cháu chắc là vui lắm...
Mưa tạnh, tôi dắt xe ra đường và nói lời chia tay với hai đứa trẻ đã cùng tôi trú mưa nãy giờ. Cả hai bước đi không quên cái vẫy tay chào thân thiện.
Chạy xe trên đường về nhà mà tâm trí tôi nghĩ ngợi thật mông lung. Tôi nghĩ về những cái có và không, đến và đi, được và mất, niềm vui và nỗi buồn luôn tồn tại và đeo đẳng một đời người.
Bỗng nhiên tôi chợt nghĩ một điều: Hạnh phúc cũng như bó hoa hồng kia, có người vô tình ném đi nhưng cũng có người luôn trân trọng và ao ước.

The girl was so scared she locked all her doors and windows. She made sure her room was secured. She wasn't sure if it was a joke or for real. She didn't know when he was going to come. The girl was so frightened she decided to sleep with her little sister. The girl dozed off quickly.
Then she heard a knock on the window. The girl slowly walked to the window. It started knocking louder. The girl looked through the windows and saw nothing... just some of the tree branches. The girl went back to bed with her sister. The bed was wet and had a pretty horrid smell. Maybe her sister wet the bed... the girl checked and found blood everywhere. The girl panicked. She didn't know what to do. She ran and hid in the closet in case the killer was there for her. While looking through the cracks of the closet the girl saw a shadow. It was dark, so she couldn't figure out who it was. She started to get more frightened. The shadow crept closer to the closet. The girl closed her eyes as if it was a dream. Then suddenly he opened the closet door and pulled her out.
Her parents found her dead the next morning. She was completely skinned and hanging in her sister's closet. The younger sister was also found skinned and dead.
PART 2...
Two years after the Smith sisters deaths, the parents had a baby boy. The girl's room became a guest room and the little sister's room where the murder took place became the baby's room. The baby grew up to be a successful kid.
